Pilot Instructor Tests Microsoft Flight Simulator

Pilot instructor Stephen Maltz tested one of Microsoft’s recent video games, a flight simulator that claims to be the next best thing to real flying.   Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020: What Is It? It is currently the most popular flight simulator game on the market today thanks to its highly detailed aircraft, realistic world, day and night flying, and different types of aircraft, ranging from monoplanes to wide-body jets.  Users can also choose different weather conditions and perspectives (for example: behind the control panel or the entire plane).    The Flight Instructor’s Verdict  The flight instructor said that while ...

Self-Flying Cessna Plane Could Be the Future of Cargo Carriers

In February 2021, a self-flying Cessna completed a fully automated gate-to-gate flight at an airport in Concord, California, just outside San Francisco. While there was a pilot inside the utility aircraft, he didn't touch even a single control and only watched over the systems and talked with the air traffic controller.  Start-up company Xwing has retrofitted a Cessna Grand Caravan 208B with a program that allows it to fly autonomously, with a remote operator monitoring the flight and only taking control if needed.  During the flight test, Xwing's control center closely watched critical data, ranging from the plane's altitude, speed, location, ...

Pilot Fell Asleep for 40 Minutes Due to Hypoxia

A small aircraft pilot in Australia fell asleep for around 40 minutes mid-flight due to fatigue, lack of sleep, and mild hypoxia, according to The Guardian report last month.  The air traffic control lost contact when the Cessna aircraft flew over Brisbane and the Gold coast in July 2020, prompting authorities to ask a Beechcraft B200 King Air pilot of the Royal Flying Doctor Service to intercept the Cessna which originally departed Cairns and was heading to Redcliffe.  The King Air pilot approached the Cessna several times in an attempt to trigger its traffic alert and collision system, but the pilot remained ...
